A number of IT asset managers have mentioned that they  received self-audit letters from Winzip.  These ITAM Pros were able to prove compliance and were waiting for confirmation from WinZip.  Lesson from this experience is that letters are likely this year, helping vendors generate low effort revenue.  Ironically, it may be the vendor who is surprised with the number of companies that provide documentation of compliance, plus request a statement from the company that they are in compliance.  The vendor may not be ready to handle the paperwork load!

210,000 employees is amazing.  $12.8 billion closed the deal.  It will be interesting to watch the merger -combining the different business models gives them an impressive suite of products and services.  I think the merger will create a good alternative for large corporations to do their outsourcing.  I believe that the merger will also be good for services companies like Animus Solutions because both companies use pinch-hit expert consultants often to work with them under the HP or EDS umbrella.  EDS has worked with many of the ITAM products for different clients so I wonder if that will be an issue for them.  If so, there many be a replacement push that will change the marketspace.  We shall see.

Well, Gartner is tranforming the old Gartner IT & Software Asset Management Summit.  They have broadened the appeal and topic coverage and renamed it the Gartner Financial, Procurement & Asset Management Summit.  This Summit will be  held October 27 - 29  at the Sheraton San Diego.  The rather difficult, but descriptive name clearly lays out the plan - to encourage more decision makers in the business of IT to the summit - regardless of their title.  Considering the desired audience are the large enterprises, I think this is an excellent move.  The business of IT has as many individual titles and roles as one can imagine.  We are never going to be as regimented as Doctor, Nurse, Engineer.  The decision makers in Finance and Procurement haven’t always understood what they were missing.  Some of this is our problem - we use the same words they do (asset management, contract management) and then apply an entire extra set of business practices to them that they might not even realize.
