I’ve talked about the virtualization of the servers in the data center before and the ramifications to IT asset management.  Recently, I had a discussion on virtualizing the desktop with Ed Cartier of Sage Technologies.  We discussed the similarities of virtualizing the desktop to the old thin client on a terminal type PC rather than purchasing and maintaining more powerful PCs.  We talked about the ease of upgrade, going from every single computer to ONE upgrade.  Like SaaS, but internal.  Interesting change.  Ramifications to us - software we buy has to work in that environment, license has to include all potential users.

The opportunity to  control the environment is enticing for us, but might be seen as a problem by some users.  Another advantage is that if the company has travellers that go from office to office, they would be able to sit down anywhere and pull up their files as if they were working on their own computer.  No more laptops?

THe terminology, the technology and the application of it is changing daily and is something for us to watch.
