Healthcare organizations are faced with major challenges from industry regulators, dealing with compliance and privacy requirements, such as HIPAA. Case and point, hospitals will invest billions of dollars in certified electronic health record (eHR) systems* to ensure accuracy and privacy of patient data, while lowering liability and risk for the organization. Only 0.5% of U.S. hospitals currently have a comprehensive electronic medical record system that provides data continuity throughout the institution.
However, in such a heavily regulated industry, it isn’t simply a matter of wanting to incorporate a system. In addition to HIPAA’s privacy and security regulations, there are other legal barriers such as the Anti-kickback Statue, the Stark anti-referral rules and, in some cases, the anti-trust laws that prevent healthcare companies from creating such a system.
