Causes for Failure

Every organization understands the vital importance of their IT systems, but very few pay attention to the successful implementation of IT tools, systems, and software programs.  The evidence is overwhelming:

In a 2009 global survey*, 44 percent of IT projects started were considered partial failures, and 24 percent complete failures.
A 2010 study** reported that among organizations implementing enterprise resource management (ERP) systems:

• 57% took longer than expected
• 54% exceeded their budgets
• 41% failed to realize at least half of the expected benefits
• 40% experienced serious disruptions upon “go-live”
• 39% of employees (the users) were unsatisfied with the results

The reasons for this alarming record of IT implementation failure range from lack of project ownership or management support to technical incompetence, inadequate resources, poor communication, insufficient training and selection of the wrong system.  In fact, implementation failure occurs for all these reasons, and many more – but all of them are easily avoidable. More importantly, we know what works, and we simply don’t allow implementation failures to occur with our clients.
