Countless studies indicate that well-trained leaders, managers and staff can increase the productivity and quality of work.

Does Training Pay?

Many studies indicate that it does, but ROI on training is difficult to measure.  Perhaps the best measure of the value of training is that the most highly regarded, successful organizations always seem to have strong, ongoing training programs for their managers and staff – companies like GE, Southwest, Intel, 3M and Apple.

Andy Grove, former president of Intel, and now a board chairman, believed that supervising company training was among his most important executive tasks, and suggested that payback could be enormous.*  His reasoning is as follows:

  • A 12-hour training session can boost a person’s productivity by one percent (1%).  If this person works 2,000 hours, this is a net gain of 20 productive hours.
  • You can train at least 10 people during that same 12-hour session to gain 200 productive hours for the same investment – a 1,667% return on your time investment.
  • Train your most productive people first, because a one percent productivity gain from them will have more impact than a one percent gain from marginal performers.
